ELIZABETH MILNER by Shakespeare's Peddler
This isn't new, but I realized recently it wasn't listed correctly on my website! I love this sampler, and it's the only old piece I ever washed. Spiders had made a little nest on the back of the sampler long, long ago!
Elizabeth Milner stitched her sampler in 1848 -- isn't it lovely? She was not perfect in her stitching, so her bands sometimes extend beyond the borders (which aren't all that straight either!) The verse is ... amusing. I guess we should all be humble, right? Look for squirrels, lions, owls, strawberries, rabbits and more. This has got a lot of charm!
I recommend 40 count Navy Bean by Lakeside Linens and Gloriana Silks/Silk N Colours. A DMC conversion is provided.
Here's the verse:
Seek to be good but aim not to be great
A woman's noblest station is retreat
Her fairest virtues fly from public sight
Domestic worth still shuns too strong a
light
