Provenance: Now in a private collection, this sampler was stitched in Lacolle, a southern municipality in Quebec, Canada in 1846 by Emeline Hotchkiss, aged 11. Research reveals an Emeline Hotchkiss was baptized in nearby Laprairie St. Luke’s Anglican Church in 1834, around the year our stitcher would have been born. Sadly, a death record exists for a young fourteen-yea- old by the same name who died on September 4, 1849, buried at Burtonville Cemetery, Quebec Canada, daughter of Alonzo and Mary Hotchkiss. If this is our Emiline, her sampler survived.
